Can any tattoo be covered up?
Not all of them. Dark, heavily saturated work usually needs laser fading before a cover-up is possible.
A cover-up works by placing a new design over an old one, using darker values and denser areas to absorb what is underneath. That means the new piece must be darker and generally larger than the original.
If the existing tattoo is already very dark or solidly filled, there is nothing darker to work with. In those cases a few laser fading sessions come first, and only then can a cover-up be designed properly. We assess this honestly at the consultation - telling you a cover-up is possible when it is not helps nobody.
How much larger will the new tattoo be?
Usually noticeably larger - the new design needs space to hide the old outline convincingly.
The old design's edges are the hardest part to conceal. A new piece that stops close to those edges tends to leave a visible ghost. Extending the composition beyond the original gives room to break up and disguise the old contour.
How much larger depends on the original. During the consultation we will sketch the realistic footprint so you can decide with accurate information rather than optimistic estimates.
Which styles work best for cover-ups?
Blackwork, dense botanical designs and heavy ornamental work - anything with dark mass and organic edges.
Styles with solid dark areas and irregular, organic shapes are the most effective, because they absorb the old design and give the eye no straight reference line to detect underneath.
Fine line and minimal styles are the least suitable - they simply do not carry enough pigment to conceal anything. If you had a delicate cover-up in mind, expect us to steer you toward something denser; it is the difference between a cover-up that works and one that shows.
