Do you use a needle or a piercing gun?
Needles only. Piercing guns cause blunt tissue trauma and cannot be properly sterilised.
A sterile single-use needle makes a clean opening, removing a tiny channel of tissue. A gun forces jewellery through by blunt pressure, crushing surrounding tissue - which means more swelling, slower healing and a higher complication rate.
Guns also cannot be autoclaved, since they contain plastic components. For cartilage in particular, the difference is not cosmetic: gun piercings on cartilage carry a materially higher risk of prolonged problems. We use needles for every piercing, without exception.
How long does each piercing take to heal?
Earlobes 6-8 weeks; cartilage 6-12 months; nostril 2-4 months; septum 6-8 weeks; navel and dermal up to 12 months.
Healing time depends mostly on blood supply and movement. Soft tissue with good circulation, such as the earlobe, recovers quickly. Cartilage has limited blood flow and takes far longer, often close to a year.
Looking healed and being healed are different things. The visible surface closes long before the internal channel is complete, which is why changing jewellery too early is one of the most common causes of irritation. When in doubt, wait - or ask us.
What jewellery should I start with?
Implant-grade titanium, or 316L surgical steel if you have no nickel sensitivity.
Initial jewellery has more influence on healing than most people realise. Implant-grade titanium is the safest option: it is biocompatible, nickel-free and suitable for people with metal sensitivities. Surgical steel is a reliable alternative for those without nickel allergies.
Avoid cheap alloys, plated jewellery, plastic and acrylic during healing. Silver in particular oxidises inside a healing channel and can permanently discolour the surrounding tissue.
