What exactly is a dermal piercing?
A single-point piercing where an anchor sits under the skin and only a decorative top is visible.
Unlike conventional piercings, a dermal has no exit point. A small anchor plate is placed in the dermal layer, and a decorative top screws onto it at the surface. This allows jewellery on flat areas of the body where a standard piercing is impossible.
Because it relies on tissue growing around the anchor rather than through a channel, placement depth is the decisive factor in whether it stays put.
Can the body reject a dermal piercing?
Yes. Rejection is a real risk, and depth, placement and impact all influence it.
Your body can gradually push an anchor toward the surface until it is expelled. Three things determine how likely this is: the depth at which the anchor is placed, how much the area moves and stretches, and whether it gets knocked.
Correct depth is the part we control, and it is the most important. Choosing a placement that is not constantly rubbed by clothing or bags is the part you control. We will discuss both before agreeing on a location.
How is a dermal removed?
Professionally, at the studio - never by pulling it yourself.
Removal requires releasing the anchor from the tissue that has grown around it. This is a straightforward procedure when done properly, and it should always be carried out by the piercer rather than at home.
Attempting to pull a dermal out can tear surrounding tissue and leave a significantly worse mark than a professional removal. If you want it taken out, come to the studio - the procedure is quick.
