Does a septum piercing hurt more than other nose piercings?
Not necessarily - when placed correctly it passes through soft tissue, not cartilage.
There is a thin section of soft tissue between the cartilage and the tip of the septum, often called the sweet spot. A correctly placed septum piercing passes through that area rather than through cartilage.
Done properly, most clients report it as a sharp pinch with strong eye-watering, over in a second. Done incorrectly, through cartilage, it is significantly more painful and heals far worse - which is why placement experience matters more here than in most piercings.
Can a septum piercing be hidden?
Yes - a retainer can be flipped up inside the nostrils and is essentially invisible.
This is one of the main practical reasons people choose a septum piercing. A circular retainer can be rotated upward so it sits inside the nose, hidden from normal view.
That makes it workable for people in environments where visible piercings are not acceptable. During healing, however, minimise flipping - repeated movement irritates the channel and slows recovery.
How long does a septum piercing take to heal?
Around 6-8 weeks when correctly placed through soft tissue.
Soft tissue heals relatively quickly, so a well-placed septum is among the faster facial piercings to recover. Some tenderness when touched and a distinctive smell during healing are both normal and temporary.
Keep it clean with sterile saline, avoid rotating or flipping it more than necessary, and do not change the jewellery before the channel is stable. If swelling increases rather than decreases after the first week, contact us.
